Lighting Your Apartment: Change the Mood in Your Space

by
Oct 16th, 2015

Did you know light, or lack thereof, can have an effect on our moods? Lightening up your moods doesn’t need to be expensive. Just by changing some of the lights in your apartment, you can change your mood and the appeal of the space.

It’s important to make sure you know the purpose of lighting up a corner in your home, which colors will suit best, and to install them in strategic positions.

Lighting and our body clocks

Throughout the day, the nerves in our brains are signified to rest and sleep at a specific time, commonly known as our circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythm dips and rises at different times a day and occurs through regular exposure to light and darkness.

When the sun is about to set, our energy levels will  minimize. During the cold weather, we’ll be less geared to move around, in comparison to sensing the heat of the sun. This is how lighting can significantly affect our moods.

To enhance your moods, opt for these LED light colors:

  • Yellow relaxes
  • Green refreshes
  • Orange energizes
  • Blue calms
  • Purple inspires creativity

Why the need for lighting accents?

As soon as you get home, your quality of relaxation will depend on the lights you’ve installed. While fluorescent lights can make us see better at night, they strain our eyes. If you need to calm down, incorporate yellow light dimmers. If you can’t chagne the lighting in your apartment, accents are the next best thing.

There are affordable LED lighting accents for you to choose from such as:

  • Interior wall lights
  • Lighting on kitchen countertops
  • Bathroom heater lights
  • Deck lights for open air patios
  • Stair lights

Which accents should be used?

While there are numerous lighting fixtures available, you can base your choices on your lifestyle. Where do you usually stay? If you hang around more in your bedroom or patio, choose its accents and the kinds of moods you’d like to achieve.

Do you lounge on the kitchen counter top while you eat dinner? Divide your kitchen lighting to task-oriented and ambient-inspired corners. Task-oriented lighting, such as white, LED lights, can be placed on top of the counter. Ambient-inspired lights, such as LED pendant lights with dimmers, can be dimmed to your liking during a relaxing dinner.

Pick your lights based on which activity is most important to you. If you spend more time in the kitchen, then the most inspiring fixtures should be placed there.

So go around your apartment and see how the lighting reflects the mood you intended for different rooms. If they don’t match, it’s time to make some changes!
