February 26th is "National Set a Good Example Day." It is a day dedicated to promoting positive behaviors and inspiring others to do the same. The day serves as a call to action. It reminds us that we have the power to shape the attitude and actions of those around us. When we make conscious choices to be kind, honest and responsible others tend to follow suit, creating a ripple effect that has no boundaries.
How To Inspire Others on Set a Good Example Day
“Be Strong – you never know who you are inspiring.” This quote is painted on the wall of my gym. The words strike me each time I read them, and I don’t believe there has ever been a more urgent call to action. You see, people are watching you all the time, whether you want them to or not. At the gym, at your workplace, at your favorite restaurant or even on vacation. The things we do and how we do them matter.
The examples you set are far reaching. From your boss to your direct reports, from your family members to your friends to those you may have never met. From the clerk at the grocery store to the stranger on the street, you are literally setting an example everywhere you go. The impact you can have on others is immeasurable.
Consider the “pay it forward” theory. This is the idea that when someone receives an act of kindness, instead of repaying that person, they should perform a similar act of kindness for a different person. Each person passing the favor on to the next person, creating a ripple effect of kindness.
When we set a good example, when we do something positive and someone else sees us, it inspires other people to do the same. And so on and so on. A ripple effect of kindness is created. Research has shown that the simple act of watching someone else do a good deed inspires us to do so as well.
This is why "National Set a Good Example Day" is such a powerful reminder of the influence we have on those around us. It challenges us to be intentional in our actions and to lead in a way that others want to follow.
The thing is, setting a good example doesn’t have to be a grand act. In fact, some of the most powerful influences come from the small, everyday actions we take. Holding the door open for someone, offering a kind word, showing patience in a difficult situation—these acts of kindness and honesty speak volumes.
In the workplace, being a positive example can mean displaying a strong work ethic, treating others with respect, and maintaining a professionalism in all situations. A leader who remains calm and collected during stressful situations can inspire their team to do the same. A coworker who meets deadlines and supports their peers creates a productive work environment.
In our communities, we can set a good example by volunteering, helping neighbors, or simply being courteous and respectful. When children see adults treating others with kindness and fairness, they learn to do the same. Our behavior becomes a model for the next generation.
On social media, where negativity can often rule, setting a good example means engaging in positive conversations, sharing uplifting content, and avoiding harmful interactions. The way we communicate online has a significant impact on others. We can choose to be a positive influence in the digital world. We can be the change we want to see.
One of the best ways to set a good example is to be true to your values. Your authenticity and integrity will shine through, and it will resonate with people. When we act in alignment with our beliefs, we inspire others to do the same. Whether it’s standing up for what is right, showing resilience in the face of adversity, or simply being honest and dependable, these qualities encourage others to follow suit.
As February 26th approaches, take a moment to reflect on the kind of example you are setting. Are your actions a reflection of the person you aspire to be? Are you inspiring those around you to be their best selves? Consider making a conscious effort to be a positive influence, not just on this day, but every day.
"National Set a Good Example Day" is an opportunity to create ripples of goodness that extend far beyond what we can see. The small choices we make, the ways we treat others, and the habits we foster all contribute to a world that is kinder, more compassionate, and filled with inspiration. Your actions matter, so be strong, you never know who you might be inspiring!
