AMLI Wraps Up 2016 with 14 ENERGY STAR Awards

by
Nov 14th, 2016

AMLI’s commitment to provide an outstanding living environment for its residents extends outside the walls of its apartment buildings. It’s also our mission to be a grateful steward to the environment wherever our communities set foot.

That’s why we’re happy to announce 14 of our luxury apartment communities are now ENERGY STAR-certified. The energy efficiency certification means residents can expect lower utility bills, less energy waste, and a place to call home that is healthy and better for the planet than most apartments on the market. The move to become certified is part of AMLI’s ongoing push to increase our positive impact in the neighborhoods where we reside, while decreasing our carbon footprint and energy usage. With tens of thousands of residents nationwide, efficient energy buildings mean a better living environment for everybody.

We are proud to say that AMLI has more certified buildings than any of our competitors in multifamily industry.

Our 14 ENERGY STAR-certified communities include:

Atlanta
AMLI North Point

Chicago
AMLI Evanston
AMLI Lofts
AMLI River North

Colorado

AMLI Riverfront Park

Seattle
AMLI at Bellevue Park
AMLI Mark24
AMLI South Lake Union
AMLI 535

How we get ENERGY STAR-certified

While the ENERGY STAR logo has been appearing on household appliances for over 20 years, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extended the program to multifamily buildings in 2014. We jumped at the opportunity.

To become certified, we must first gather and prepare energy data from local utility companies before sending it over to ENERGY STAR. Don’t worry, no one will know if you left your hair straightener on or how much time you really spend in front of the TV. ENERGY STAR does take the utility usage of individual apartments into consideration, but that is tallied up with amenity areas and other areas to generate a final score for the entire building. Performance is adjusted for factors such as the building’s size, the number of units, and the weather in the area, then plotted on a 100-point scale. If the building scores above 75, its eligible to become certified.

All ENERGY STAR-certified buildings are in the top 25 percent of energy efficient buildings nationwide. Unlike other sustainability awards, the ENERGY STAR certification isn’t a one-time deal—performance gets reevaluated every year. Despite the large commitment this entails, we will continue to invest more and more resources to this sustainable ventures and others in the coming years.

If your building becomes certified, look for the plaque hanging in the lobby.

Things you can do in your apartment to be more ENERGY STAR-friendly

  • Buy ENERGY STAR-certified appliances. Just look for the ENERGY STAR logo!
  • Replace traditional light bulbs with LED lights, which dramatically reduce energy usage and last much longer.
  • Simply turning off lights and appliances when you’re not using them.
  • Take advantage of the programmable thermostats AMLI provides in many of its units. If you’re not sure how to do it yourself, reach out to the maintenance team for some help.

In other sustainable news…

This good news comes on the tails of other recent sustainability wins for AMLI. AMLI at Mueller and AMLI Covered Bridge in Austin, Texas both received prestigious LEED certifications. AMLI at Mueller was awarded a LEED Platinum and AMLI Covered Bridge received LEED Gold, bringing the count of AMLI’s LEED-certified properties to a grand total of 23.
